What brought you to East Boston? I moved to East Boston with my boyfriend 2 ½ years ago. We both work downtown and wanted more space than we could get in other parts of the city.

What drew you to CrossFit?I’ve always loved group exercise. I was taking barre classes for several years, but was getting tired of doing the same routines all the time. I wanted to try CrossFit to mix up my regular workouts, but was too intimidated. It wasn’t until a friend of mine joined CrossFit617 that I thought maybe I could do it too.

What was your expectation on your first day at CJP? How has your perception changed since that day?I was incredibly intimidated and expected to be the worst person in the class. I’m pretty sure I was the worst person, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it didn’t matter. Knowing now what a supportive environment it is and how many scaling options are available, there really is no reason to let intimidation stop anyone from trying.

What keeps you coming back to CJP?The people and the variety. The entire CJP community is so welcoming and supportive. I also love that all I have to do is show up and I know I’m going to get a great workout with a really fun group of people.

Biggest improvements/struggles with CrossFit?I think my biggest improvement has been anything involving the barbell. In barre classes we used 2-3lb dumbbells, so picking up a barbell and loading it with weight was very foreign to me. My biggest struggle is definitely pull-ups. If I can get one pull-up in my lifetime I’ll be happy.

What are some of the changes you have experienced in your physical appearance, strength and/or body composition. How have you used this outside of the gym?The biggest change I’ve noticed is in my energy level. I have lupus so I’m regularly dealing with fatigue, but keeping a consistent routine at CrossFit has helped boost my energy levels a tremendous amount. As far as body composition, I’ve noticed the biggest difference in my arms. I guess lifting weights heavier than 2lbs will do that!

If you could create your own WOD, what movements would you use?Bear complex, box jumps, running, dumbbell snatches, and I actually enjoy burpees in small doses.

Meat head nickname (with explanation)? The closest thing I have to a meathead nickname is a friend who calls me Bear. What makes this less meaty is it stems from calling me a Care Bear.

If you were to encourage someone on the fence of joining the CJP community, what would you say?Do it! I’ll go with you!
